'88 245 Starter Replacement (Crazy Starter Problem SOLVED) 200 1988

Hello 240 Volvo helpers,

A heat wave of upper twenty degrees today, and I was able to head out to the garage to do some more work on the Volvo wagon today.

As you may recall from one of my last posts on the 19th that I had spent the day going over all of the wiring and replaced some suspect wires and connectors, and I finally got the starter to engage when running a jumper from the solenoid terminal to the positive battery terminal. The was great, but when I hopped into the drivers seat to turn the key, nothing happened.

Well....I'm slightly embarassed to tell you this morning, but happy nontheless. When I began looking over all of the wiring again this morning I noticed that on the 19th when I did the jumber test, I had forgotten to reinstall the small wire to the solenoid. Today I reattached the lead, and the car starts like it's 1988 again!

To sum it all up, I believe my original problem had to do with the ground lead that runs from the P/S pump to the engine block. When I removed it, I noticed that many of the strands at both crimped ends had broken, causing a less than perfect grounding situation. I'm thinking that's probably what caused my initial problem that started all of this. The good news is, the twenty year old starter probably needed a rebuild anyway, and the three year old battery was probably going to go bad soon, so these are just a few things I won't have to worry about anytime soon.

Thanks for all your assistance!

Oscar
