Whine in Driveline 200 1990

Two days ago my '90 240 5-speed manual 150K developed a whine in all gears between 20 and 50mph. Past 50 and it disappears. I coasted in neutral and it didn't make any difference. Acceleration and deceleration no difference. I checked trans and dif lube--both full. I tried to determine where the noise is coming from, but it is very difficult. If I had to guess, I'd say the front half of the car. Any ideas?
