My '95 940 is having some intermittent flooding problems. Most of what I'm finding from searching the archives here point to a bad FPR, but I'm not sure. Last Monday I drove the car over to the shop to do a little investigating. The car started normally that time, after flooding out once the day before. I pulled 15" of vacuum on the FPR, and it held steady, so I'm thinking that the diaphragm is good. There also was no fuel in the vacuum line during the flood situations, either. I have not been able to verify fuel pressure as I have mis-placed the adapter for my fuel pressure gauge. I pulled the plugs and found them all black and sooty, but dry. (I'm sure they were black at this point due to the previous flooding and the short drive (< 1/2 mile) to the shop. Once I reinstalled the plugs I got a no-start, but it would cough and sputter a little. I again pulled the plugs to find them all wet with gas. I burned all four plugs dry with a mapp gas torch and reinstalled them. The car started, but sputtered for about 15-20 seconds until all of the residual fuel burned off. Once running smoothly, I pulled each injector connector off in turn to see if there was any difference between cylinders. There was no detectable difference, but I was not watching the tach, either. I then drove the car to the parts store to get a set of plugs and a can of Chevron Techron injector cleaner. I poured the cleaner in the tank and then drove it kinda hard on the way home. The car started immediately, BTW. Once home I pulled the plugs and found them all to be a nice light tan color, so I did not install the new set. The car ran flawlessly all week until yesterday. My wife said she had to crank it just a bit longer one time, but it still started OK. Today it started fine in the morning before church, but sputtered a bit when we were leaving for home. The sputtering lasted about 15-20 seconds and actually reminded me of how it was running when I had one injector unplugged. This evening it was a full flood-out. I had to hold the pedal to the floor to get enough air in to get it going again. Once started it ran fine. After sitting for about two hours, it started fine again. No codes have been set.
Any ideas? I'll keep looking for the adapter for my fuel pressure gauge so I can verify fuel pressure.
Thanks,
Dave
