m46 4th gear switch location? 200

I've read that the 4th gear switch location is on the top right of the gear box. My question is how does someone determine which side of the transmission. Drivers side or passangers side. My guess is the rear part of the gear box on the drivers side. Plan on changing it out soon and was hoping to not have to lower the transmission at all. AM I crazy or do I have to lower it a little to get the socket on? thanks.
