Report on siping tires

Last summer I had new tires put my '93 940 wagon. At the time I had them sipe the tires. For those who aren't familiar with siping, it is the process of cutting razor thin slits across the tread about every half inch. The purpose is to give the tire more gripping edges and, hence, greater traction on wet pavement. We get a bit of that here in Oregon.

Well, yesterday we had 5 inches of wet, slippery snow. I grabbed the chance to test out the siped tires. I was really impressed with the 940's handling in the snow. The 940 had no problem getting moving and had very good stopping ability. It felt very stable and I had to really goose the engine to break the rear end loose. There was a 4-wheel drive Chevy Blaser in front of me having trouble keeping going straight while my 940 felt like it was on rails!

I do believe the 940 would be a good snow car in any case. The locking differential and ABS brakes are good for snow. The weight balance front-to-rear seems good as well.

No glare ice yet so I don't know how these tires will work on that.

I'm curious to see if others have tried this tire siping and what their experience has been. Has anyone else go something to add to this?
