1986 240 DL Wagon - Speedometer "tops out' - about 80kph 200

My "Yellow Submarine" (my wife calls it Marina) has a speedometer problem. When I first got it a few months ago, I didn't notice that the speedo wouldn't read any higher than 100kph (Canadian car) 'cause I rarely went that fast. Now it won't go above 80kph. Don't get me wrong - the car goes faster. I've been on 100kph-limit highways and have kept up with the traffic (and as you know most people go more tha the limit).

1. It's not that the odometer doesn't work - though I have no easy way of checking whether it registers based on the 80kph or my actual speed - I'd tend to think it would run the numbers based on the speed I'm seeing on the needle, unless the problem is the needle gets stuck but the input to the unit is fine.

2. It's not a tire-size problem - I know I have 185/70r14s on it, so I know I'm going about 5-10% slower than the speedo is reading (originals were 185/75r14s).

3. It's not a problem of one or the other (speedometer/odometer) not working - I've seen a few posts on that problem.

Any help? Greatly appreciated.

We bought it 'cause it was cheap and will keep our kids safe! Tell me another car that costs only $25 to replace the cap, rotor, and all spark plugs!
