Hello,
I used to own a 94 850 turbo which i attempted to turn into a 5 speed when the tranny went and unfortunately it didnt go as well as i had hoped. I got a little excited and the engine was too beat up in the first place, it was a dumb undertaking on my part, but i had fun and that's what it is all about for me.
Anyway, i am fortunate to have found an 89 740 turbo wagon, automatic unfortunately, but the best part is that it has 55k original miles! The previous owner lived 2 miles from me. It is white with the red leather interior and is very clean. I am trying to do all the standard maintenace and get it running in tip-top shape and i have noticed a couple of issues.
1). When idling the car seems to shudder every 5-10 seconds. The RPMs drop very slightly as does the vacuum. Not terribly annoying but it can be felt in the car. The motor mounts were replaced less than 2k miles ago. This happens in all gears. I also notice the shudder when i am hitting the brakes which makes me think there is a vacuum issue.
2). The car seems to take a long time warming up and is very sluggish when cold, on occasion it will stall out when i put it in reverse/drive.
3). It seems to be lacking some power. I am used to the feeling of a turbo starting to pull and this doesn't have it. I notice the boost gauge does go into the yellow but it doesn't feel like it is boosting. On top of that i hear a strange sound when i let off the gas. It sounds sort of like a fan blade slowing down, not a terrible grating sound but not like a release of air either. I know on my 850 the wastegate arm needed to be hammered back into the housing because it was releasing pressure, could this be it?
Anyway i know this was a long first post. I learned a lot from wroking on my 850 but this is a slightly different animal. Once i get everything all cleaned up i will take some pics for anyone interested in seeing them.
Thanks,
Mike
