Water pump life 700 1987

I was talking to the former owner of my 740 GLE and he said the timing belt was replaced in the 6 years he owned it, but not the water pump. I see no indication of the water pump ever being replaced in the 14 years of maintenance records I own.

I called a Volvo repair shop and mentioned this to the mechanic, and he said that the pump most likely wasn't original because they tend to wear out at 70,000 miles.

The car runs great, and the water pump quietly dies its job with no signs of failure.

Should I go ahead and just get it replaced to be safe? Or should I keep driving the car until the pump starts making noise?

How many miles have you gotten out of your water pump? How big and expensive of a job is it to get the pump replaced?

Any thoughts/commentary is appreciated.
