1988 740GLE Wagon Wet Carpets - Help Please ........ 700

1988 740GLE wagon I bought last week when it rains has wet carpets in drivers side area and also behind drivers seat in passenger area on drivers side. Wetness is at bottom/floor level not sides. The carpets on other side of car both front & back are dry/fine. It is definitely water not coolant. Where could this water be coming in from ? What can be done about this ? I sealed off sunroof which had a visually bad seal yet problem remains so I know it is not coming in from roof. Maybe from grate area just behind hood in front of & at middle of windshield ? Can I seal this off or does this grate need to get air ? Thanks in advance for advice on dealing with this matter. By the way I think this is a great car so far. I never owned a 740 before - just 240's.
