I wanted to share with everyone a recent no start experience with my '91 240 and to offer a warning to check your fuel pump relays.
Last Friday it had rained all day. After stopping for gas about thirty miles from home, the car wouldn't start. The engine was turning over but it felt like it wasn't getting gas so I checked the fuel pump relay. When I disconnected the relay, the problem was obvious. The relay had filled with water! I had an extra relay in the glove compartment so I was quickly on my way again.
During heavy rain, there would occasionly be a bit of water on the passenger side mat but never enough to cause concern. The problem was the relay had sat in its clip in such a way that the connector was on top allowing water that ran down the wires to collect over time inside the relay housing.
I plan to reattach the relay with the connector at the bottom and a loop in the wires to keep the relay from filling again. I'll also try to track down and fix the leak (No easy task).
In the meantime, I wanted to give everyone a head's up about this potential problem. It might be a good idea to check your relays.
