I bought a 1977 Volvo 264 Grande Luxe about three years ago for $500. I bought an engine from the junkyard, a 1983 B23F. I rebuilt the engine and rebuilt the M46 transmission. It took about two years and cost about $1000 - $1500. Since I have rebuilt the steering and brakes, the cost has risen by $300. I still need to rebuild the suspension at a cost of around $1000. The climate equipment also needs work. I even had to change the oil on occasion.
In the end, I end up with what I started with, a car.
I had to address all of these issues including MAJOR electrical work during the conversion, or the car would have stopped operating or would have been dangerous to operate.
I have not taken this car to a shop once. Nobody is going to grub it up and screw it up but me. The carpet needed attention after strange fur covered worms festered inside half eaten taco bell. After the taco bell was consumed, they infested the carpet. I then replaced the carpet with new scrap. After all, no grubbing is allowed in my car.

Let me show you another picture:

The first thing my shop told me to do was junk it.
Don't think that paying a lot of money for something makes it good. Use judgement always.
