Watr Pump Seal Question 700 1990

B230 NA - The top "hat" seal on my water pump is starting to leak a tiny bit. It's only been in there about a year. When I previously had it apart, I noticed the mating surface under the head had a very subtle "bump" that pertruded down right into the top of the seal. It feels quite smooth and I'm guessing it's about .020 inch high at it's peak and is about half the diameter of a pencil eraser. I was wondering if anyone else had ever seen something like that on their car. I remember when I pulled it apart I could see a sight indent in the top of the seal from said "bump". I want to grind it off when I have it apart this time, but I'm wondereing if it has some purpose like limiting how close the pump can be pressed up against the head or some wierd thing like that????

Thanks.
