245T rear end noise... Internal problem? 200 1984

Hi all,

I know you all hate seeing posts along the lines of "my car makes a noise, what's wrong?", but I gotta give it a try. The car (84 245T) is sitting at my mechanics after he called me and said he couldn't figure out whats up.

Here's the rundown:

Loud rear end noise... sounds like the noise when lightly applying brakes with rusty rotors.

Occurs when at steady throttle or when decelerating. Diminishes when accelerate strongly.

Completely DISAPPEARS when brakes are applied.

So far, brakes have been totally checked and are A1. Center driveshaft bearing seems OK. Wheel bearings are fine. Rear diff oil is topped up and contains no metal shavings.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Where should we concentrate our search? I'm heading over there soon to run the car while on the hoist to see if we can pinpoint the location..... but worried we won't be able to recreate without load.

Car has been lowered by 1.5 coils and I haven't yet installed an adjustable panhard rod to center the rear end.

I've had suggestions that it sounds like a ring gear carrier bearing in the diff...

Thanks in advance, hope to get back on the road soon. I do love this car, so much more character than the econobox honda I'm driving in the meantime...

Cheers
