Replacing the od solenoid question 200

Od out since i bought the car (87 245 automatic), od worked intermittently after I flushed the transmission fluid, but its not working at all now. I've resoldered the relay and checked the wiring to the solenoid. Had a mechanic take a look and was told that its either a plugged/faulty solenoid or something internal.

I am going to replace my OD solenoid soon and i've been reading up on it. I have one question though. in the faq I read this:" [Editor] One user reported that removing the solenoid and turning the engine over seemed to pump enough oil through the recess to clean it out and enable operation. This is messy, though."

I take it, this is to clean out the od where the solenoid meets it. Should I cover the openings with a towel? How long should I turn it over for? Thanks.
