1993 engine temp sensors 900 1993

I have a 960 wagon that hates starting when the temp falls below freezing... it will crank for a very long time, sometimes until the battery dies. I beleive the problem is in the engine temp sensor. I know that there are two of these on the straight 6 but dont know which one is responsible for adjusting fuel/air mix and which just tells temp of engine on the dashboard gauge. One is located near the thermostat housing, the other on the rear of the engine against the firewall. Any ideas? Does it sound like this could be to blame? car runs fine once started and will start ok for the rest of the day unless it sits again for 8 or more hours. The 900 FAQ section describes this some but I am left wondering if both need to be replaced or is one responsible for fuel injection and the other just the gauge or do both play a roll in timing/injection? I had the crank and cam sensors replaced some time ago which fixed some skipping at higher speeds. Thanks.
