Water Temperature Gauge / overheating? 200 1980

On my '80 245DL, I've replaced the thermostat, water pump and temperature sensor, but the gauge still shows the car getting hot. The shop says the temp is fine. I had coolant loss a while back and found that it was caused by a slow leak in one of the hoses, and that has been fixed.

Questions:

1. Are the gauges prone to failure? (I have a spare I can try.)

2. Do the older models have the same compensation board issues as the later models? If so, is the fix the same?

Thanks in advance!
