I think Aleekat gave you the scoop about OBD codes
In my 89 700 you go to the left tower and there's a little connector with a cover that you remove and the directions are in that FAQ.

Maybe there's some clue sitting there, but the check engine light usually comes on to let you know there's a code, but that idiot light could be dead too.
