dirt simple.. what could I be missing... (mechanical fuel pump) 140-160 1971

I can think of a couple possibilities.
Is it pretty cold where you are?
VolvoGirl had problems with water in her gas freezing and plugging things
up in Maine in her unheated shop - maybe you have a filter/trap with ice in it
that thaws later.
Another possibility is a pinhole in the line before the pump so it sucks air.

B20 and B30 pumps are the same unit.

Strombergs can be a pain but I don't think you can pin the rose on them in this case.
