'96 960 muffler/cat connection S90-V90 1996

I'm having trouble getting the flared connection on the front muffler and the ball at the rear of the catalytic converter to seal tightly enough to not leak exhaust. I purchased a new Starla clamp with the new muffler, and cleaned the ball on the cat. Is there anything else I should do? I'm tempted to order the Volvo clamp to see if that helps. I don't see any remnants of a gasket is there supposed to be another substance between the two? Thanks.
Marlin
