240 RUNS OUTA GAS W/ HALF TANK! HELP 200 1984

hello Gang, nebie here, but not nebie to Volvo's. I love 'em too.
I have a new issue.....as long as i keep the fuel tank near (6 gal from full) I'm ok...if i let it go too long and get more than 6 gallons out, the car looses fuel pickup and slowky dies.
A friend who used to be a volvo mech. (to some degree), said it's a simple rotten hose issue in the trunk of my 1984 240 gl sedan. So i went to the junk yard and poked around on a 1987 sedan.The access thing looked like it screwed down or something and had a few hoses coming out of the top....two questions come to mind....
1) do u think it's a rotten hose issue or..
2) an inside the tank pump issue...

oh yea, the odometer does not work and the gas guage does not work....so i carry 3 gallons around with me all the time...not fun.
