Alternator or not 900 1991

Broke down last night after needing a jump start and minutes later the lights all went dim including the dashboard and then the car had no guts till it ground to a halt. New battery and alls well until tonight when i noticed the dash lights all out except the red ones along the bottom glowing very dull. When i got home i revved the engine and the headlamps did not get any brighter so assume the alternator is gone south. so is there a way i can check it in laymens terms or am i thinking wrong? 940s wagon/estate petrol 1991. cheers n beers ;-))
