'89 245--Noise when braking? 200

IPD overload coils w/ KYB rear shocks (35K on shocks and tires)-- Bridgestone Turanza LST. Rear tires are a bit chopped up from shot track rod bushings and sound like snow tires. Bushings now replaced. I think the shocks may be shot relative to the OL springs, but that's a different issue.
On firm braking at 50 mph down to around 40, get sort of a whining/yelping/groaning (impossible to describe, but not metallic, and I don't think it's the brakes and it's different from the chop). Don't get it at lower speed braking. I put a 20 yr. old 245 special spare on RR, crossed fingers, drove, and sound on braking went away. My WAG is out of round tire or tire layers beginning to separate. Tire place says no separation, but...
Thoughts?

TIA
