temperture gauge 120-130

Yesterday I was running my 122 for a while to warm it up, it been sitting for a while so I needed to run it. I had to choke it like usual till she got warm then it started to smooth out. I realized the temperture gauge shot all the way up after about 10 to 15 mintues of running it. I when under the hood and it seemed that is was not really hot, I even opened the radiator cap with very little pressure coming out , and the antifreeze was no were near boiling. I was wondering what could have caused the gauge to shoot up so fast? could it be faulty? thermostat? any ideas

thanks
