Fuel tank leak fixes

Hello,

I'll admit that this isn't for my 1970 Volvo, but a 1988 Caprice. I had assumed all metal tanks could be repaired in the same manner and think it won't be long before the Volvo will be in the same way. I assume the tank will need drained and removed before taking it to the welder? The monstrous 25 gallon Chevy tank would be a nightmare to drain, remove, and transport. Are there any welding techniques that would allow for repair while the tank is still in place?
