Not sure what "freedoms" were eroded. We don't have a big problem when our version of the IRS tells us that we are about to be audited; we understand that most suicides in the US are caused by that edict from the IRS. Liberty? We allow the illegals to come to Canada, and give them a chance at a new life if there is a good reason for them to leave their homes. I suppose you see that as cowardice.
We choose to fight where there is clear injustice, such as Afghanistan. We chose NOT to fight in what is considered an illegal war, Iraq. When the UN declares that war to be justified, Canadians will be there, not before. The "cowards" who choose not to fight in that illegal conflict find support in Canada for exactly that: they cannot morally support it. I suggest that the "cowards" would be fine fighting in Afghanistan due to its status in NATO and the UN. Personally, I find the war in Afghanistan to be senseless: that country has been under attack for over a thousand years without success: the chances of "winning" are slim to none...
Your friends in Manitoba are welcome to head to the US, but they won't. We have a blowhard here who yells about his rights and freedoms being eroded, but stopped yelling when he had a heart attack and DIDN'T lose his house, and a few of us remind him of this fact any time he starts chirping. Invite your friends down there to live, I think you will find that they are just blowing smoke.
