Rear ended Question about damage? 200 1990

Today I was rear ended by a car. Both of us were waiting to merge it to main road and that person was behind me . He thought of overtaking me and merge in the middle lane rather than the rightmost lane. Impact was little as he started from stand still and may be had 4-5 feet to accelerate.his passanger side bumper hit my car's driver side rear bumper . No visible damage . A small piece of foam came out of his car . I checked the bumper shock, It had depressed and bounced back to normal position, evident from scractes on the undercoating on the shock shaft. I took his number and left. Is it something to be repaired .Does that shock still has life or it is spent
