OD Gasket on M41 type J 1800 1972

Just finished pulling a M41 out of a 72ES. I wanted to put a new gasket where the OD meets with the transmission adaptor and that's where my problem started..... after removing the shift box from the top of the transmission and then the 10 mounting nuts I was able to separate the two by only an 1/8". The book I'm using says it should just pull apart so I must be doing something wrong. I can turn the OD to the left and right and it hits on the bolt studs so there is some play but nothing I do gives me more play away from the transmission. Any ideas will be appreciated. The #s off the OD are SN 25/115622/013473 and it is a Laycock OD type J. Thanks for reading my Post, Howard H
