Slight coolant loss/irreguarity normal ? 700 1988

1988 740GLE wagon auto 168,000 miles. Just got this car about a month ago. Had to replace water pump as it had shaft play/leaked. Did that about 3x weeks ago and car has been driven aprox. 1000x miles since then. I notice that when i check reservoir bottle each morning after car has been sitting overnight that the level varies. Some days it is right at max. line , some days 1/4" below, some days 1/8" below, some days 1/2" below. Is this normal ? Am I being crazy picky expecting it to be at exact same level each morning ? Over past week it has been consistantly below the max. line by 1/4" to 1/2" . I can not see any leaks anywhere. However I do see an ever so slight wetness on drivers side of head. Could head gasket be cause ? As it is ever so slight should I just let it be and add a couple of Ounzes of coolant say every 1000x miles ? Or should I replace head gasket ? That would be a big($$)job I think and maybe uncalled for. Advice, help, & feedback on this are appreciated. Thanks very much.
