83 240 ecu problems 200

I just purchased an 83 240 GL auto. It ran ok for a few days than stated giving me trouble. I took out the Bentley and ran thru all the test but came up with nothing. So off to the shop it went. Two weeks later it's still at the shop. The car came with two ecu's if you put one in the car runs super rich. If you put the other in it runs so lean that you can't drive it. Could both ecu's be bad or the wrong model? Could some thing else be causing the problem? The shop tells me that both ecu's are 511 and the correct one is a 504. Any help would be great. I was hoping to use this car for my DD and park my truck since fuel is $3.69 a gal.
