1986 245DL NonTurbo, entire engine harness replaced last year. 100 Amp Alt that has been pumping out 14.8 volts for a year and a half. Six month old battery that tested good and held the recharge this morning. Did work on fixing dash and switch lights this weekend.
Jumped in Inga this AM and the Voltmeter was laying over in the orange and that was new. Pulled out the VOM and sure enough 12 Volts. Then I noticed that all of the idiot lights were out when you went to position II. And the of course now the battery is dead and Inga will not start. Pulled the battery and went down and had it charged and it passed with flying colors. Replaced the regulator in the Alt just for the heck of it and same problem.
Now if my eyesight was 30 years younger I would be able to read that small print in the Bentley. Heck the yellowed pages of the Hayes is easier to read. The car starts and we have all the lights with the exception of the idiot lights. The fuse across the top of the speedo is making good contact so scratch that. The lights work with the dimmer and the turn signals and all of the other lights work. Fuel and Water Temp work, so does the Tach and speedo. No that would seem to point to the fuse link, but like I said that rings true. Checked the board and any burned runs or damage, and the only thing that I found was some black junk on the black wire on the half moon. That is ground for the cluster if I read things right so that would check out since the speedo and tach both work.
So that seems to point to the Voltage Regulator transistor or something I missed. Does anyone have a test for the regulator or have any ideas what I should be checking. I am sure I have a donor out in the garage but I did not find it tonight. May have to make a PUP run, but waiting on the BB input first.
Now the oil pressure light has been out for a week, but I know everything else worked. Just to toss that one out there.
Thanks and Regards,
Paul
