I've been pulling gauge clusters from the later 240s I have in hopes of making one good one out of the spares.
I'm now confused about the connections for the wiring. There are two harness plugs and 1 single small wire that are unique. No problem hooking these up but it leaves unconnected 2 wires and 3 connectors.
The back of the cluster then has 3 remaining connections: 2 males (M) in 1 U terminal just right of the odometer and 1 female (F) just right of the clock. (Right = towards the passenger side of the car when it was installed ie. the cluster turned face-down but not rotated.)
Car 1: 86 244 M46 has 3 wires: 1 blue F, 1 white/red stripe, 1 orange (F), No males.
Car 2: 86 245 M46 has 2 wires - the blue & white/red as above.
Car 3: 87 244 AT has 2 wires as above. The cluster from this car has a small piece of flexible plastic around the u-shaped connector.
Car 4: 91 245 M47 has 2 wires as above plus a yellow/ w red stripe wire with male end that goes into the one female connector.
I have the cluster back in car 1 and everything (gauges, signals, oil & amp lights, OD-on light, high-beam light) work as they should except the "brake failure" light which remains on. It was not on before I started working on the cluster.
Can anyone describe the correct wire connections to the back of the cluster? I tried the diagrams in the Bentley & Haynes but they were too small to read. I'll try again tomorrow though.
(Yes, it was dumb to have pulled the clusters without noting the wire positions. I'd remembered (incorrectly) that everything was grouped into 3 unique terminals and didn't pay attention as I removed the cluster from the good (86) car.
