Another 'new to Volvo' question.... 700 1987

Hi again guys,

I have a couple questions about my cooling system. I asked before about the aux fan, and part of the reason I asked was that the wires leading to the fan thermostat are falling apart - changing the radiator put too much stress on them, when I put the thermostat back in.

The radiator-looking thing that the aux fan is in front of - what is it??? What does it do? I can't figure it out. It's not the radiator proper. A bunch of the metal fins are dented around the fan - like the aux fan was replaced some time ago.

Can I buy a new set of wires for the fan thermostat? If so, where?
