I am replacing some rubber on my newly aquired 1990 740 Wagon.
I purchased the Boge Hydraulic Control Arm Stay Bushings from FCP Groton, and they are exact replacements for what I found in the car. The bushings weren't split or cracked, but they do appear to have taken a permanent compressed set. I figure replacing them can't hurt, since the brickboard consensus is that they are almost always bad.
I purchased Volvo bushings for the 21 mm sway arm from Tasca Volvo Parts, (cheaper than the aftermarket ones) and also the rubber bushings for the sway arm links.
The old rubber bushings (4 per side) on the sway arm link are assembled differently on the left and the right side. They are split and cracked and shot. On both sides the assembly is as follows (starting from the middle down):
Link rod, Flat Washer, Bushing, Control Arm, Bushing, Cupped Washer, Lock Nut
On one side the assembly is as follows (starting from the middle up):
Link Rod, Flat Washer, Bushing, Sway Bar, Bushing, Cupped Washer, Lock Nut.
On the other side:
Link Rod, Cupped washer, Bushing, Sway Bar, Bushing, Flat Washer, Lock Nut.
Can anyone shed some light on which assembly is correct?
Also, do the rubber bushings the same on top and bottom, or do they need to be correctly oriented? (mine have not arrived yet).
I understand that there is no sleeve on the bushings to adjust the amount of compression, but that you just crank the locknut until you get a certain distance between the washers. Could someone please verify that?
Thanks
