It sounds like you can safely say that the Brakes are not the issue.
Just one more suggestion about the Brakes, If you push the Pads totally away from the Rotor, you still get the dry Grind?
I never did Bearings on a Volvo specifically. But if you are just doing those outter bearings, It should not take more then 1.5 hours a side.
The Dana 44 axles have the Clip in the Diff, So does the Dana 35 Jorell Mentioned thatthe Volvo Dana 30 does not have the Clip...Good, that saves time.
Take the Brake assembly off, 4 bolts on the Axle plate and with a slide Hammer you whack the axle out. Jorell will probably know if the bearings are pressed onto the axle or in the Axle Housing. If it's prtessed onto the axle, you can cut the old one off with a small grinding wheel but you will need to have the new one Pressed on.
It really isn't a bad do it yourselfer job. Just make sure you can get the Oil fill Plug out so you can refill with oil.
As far as your question about having it done for you. I bet they will charge 2 hours a side in Labor Bearings and race THEY will charge about $50 for $30 worth of parts.
