Windshield Wipers 700

I have a few questions about the windshield wipers on my car.

First off, after a few minutes of operation they start to make this annoying screech when returning to the down position. This noise is coming from the cowl in the area of the driver's side wiper and sounds kind of metallic. Is something rubbing or self destructing in there?

When I bought the car it was a rainy day and I turned the windshield wipers on. They worked fine but then seemed to go haywire. The driver's side would go off the side of the windshield and the passenger side would either just lay there or go in a random direction.

The guy managed to make them work correctly by adjusting the nut on the passenger wiper arm, and there have been no problems since, but I am wondering if this is due to stripped splines on the arm? I know problems don't just "go away."

Any thoughts?
