ACC Temperature Control Knob 700 1988

The Temperature Control Knob on my 1988 780 is not operating properly. The only time it provides heat is when it’s set to the highest (warmest) setting. One click lower and it starts blowing cool; no in-between. Looking at the FAQ I see similar scenarios but none that are exactly the same as mine. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the problem but, when I first bought the car (about six months ago) the Air Distribution Control would sometimes blow air from the defrost regardless of the setting (I think it defaults to this for safety reasons). This particular problem hasn’t happened for a couple months now. Anyway, any suggestions on the most likely cause of this Temperature Control Knob problem? As always, thanks for the help. I really enjoy reading the Questions and Answers.
