External leaking head gasket (a lot!) able to plug up converter? 200 1990

A friend of mine owns a car repair shop and says my crack in the front header pipe (where a weld is) and the leak between the front pipe and the cat converter is due to the head gasket leak, that the cat converter is getting clogged. Another friend says it sounds unlikely as the cause, & I think I replaced the converter a couple of years ago (not sure, maybe not, I need to keep better records with which 240 got what). Anyways, is that possible, the coolant leaking follows the pipe down? So now I need a new front pipe & cat.
