Sudden drop in MPG? 200 1983

My beloved 240 4-door went in for a "tune up" so it could pass the infamous California Emissions ("smog") test.

It passed (!), but now is getting about 60% of the MPG it was getting.

Since it had, ah, POOR mileage before, and gas prices out here are insane, I'd love to have ANY modification suggestions on improving MPG.

[I vaguely recall someone saying something a long time ago about vacuum hoses, smog, and MPG... is there some emissions bypass that would have been corrected to pass smog test but would reduce MPG?]

[Alternatively, could it be something dumb, like "low on automatic transmission fluid"? I do have a slow leak...]

All suggestions / insight / shared dismay appreciated.

Thanks!

- K
