Seatbelt repair? 900

I just spoke to a seller about his 93 940 Sedan. His mechanic for some reason latched the belt with no one in the seat, and then it wouldn't come back out. The owner said he wrestled with it for a while, then jammed a screwdriver in it to get it out. Now he states that the belt won't stay latched and he hears the "ding, ding." I can turn a wrench but I've never done anything on a Volvo. Would it be relatively easy for me to pick up the bottom or latching part of the seat belt from a salvage yard and do a "field replacement" with simple tools? It's 80 miles from home, so I don't have the guts to ride home with no belt. Also, I thought I remember there being something "special" about replacing the seatbelts after an accident. This car supposedly wasn't in an accident, but I wonder if that adds to the complexity level. Otherwise it sounds pretty decent - 170K miles/$1600, at least over the phone.
