vibration at 3000rpm. 900 1993

Thank you.

The noise can definately be heard from under the hood. Almost exactly 3000rpm. The exhaust shields are tight, so I don't think that is the cause. It does sound like a very loud loose exhaust shield. I can't figure where the noise is comming from - seems like the whole engine. The dash vibrates and there is quite a buzz in the cabin at 3000rpm. (The center console buzzes with the vibration.) After replacing the transmission mount, the vibration changed. It used to be occur from 2000-3000rpm, but was somewhat less pronounced. Now it is pretty quiet below 2800rpm, very loud at 3000rpm, and goes away above 3200rpm. I also changed the distributor at the same time - so I don't scientifically know that it was the transmission mount that caused this change or if it could be the distributor.

I am wondering if it can be the motor mounts. The ones in there are not compressed, but they do have small cracks on the surface - perhaps the previous owner used an inferior brand. However, at idle, there is no vibration. Are there other possible causes?

Thanks so much,
Steve
