87-740 AW72L overdrive issue. Replace, repair, disable???

There is a short in the wire where it abuts the solenoid. I was able to get it to pass 11.7 volts, but the solenoid still doesnt operate.
At this point Im assuming the solenoid has given up the ghost.
Unless there's something Ive overlooked?

If the solenoid is dead what would be my best option?:
1.Buy a new solenoid?
2.Get one from a wrecker?
3.Disable the solenoid and modify so it functions permanently as a 4 speed tranny?

All suggestions, tips, observations, recommendations are welcome.

Thank you.

Lawrence
