..1 Mile OD New Gear Problem found 200 1986

Saw a post this last week about installing a new gear and the OD only moving .1 mile and stopping. I had a speedo with the same problem out in the garage and today I decided to get to the bottom of the problem.

If you took a dental pick and rotated the gear it would suddenly hang up. Then you could complete another mile and it would hang up again. Did Art's 20 mph test and it did the same, a mile and then lock up. Tracked the problem down to the reset on the Odometer. The gears were what was causing it to stick. Here is what I did to fix it.

Take the Speedo out and hold the reset button out straight. Then it and push it in four or five times in a row. Then take a small screwdriver tip or a dental pick and spin the gears and see if it will go past the 1 mile on the OD. If it goes a couple of miles you should have the problem fixed.

Hooked it up to the 60 Hz and 24and let it run for about 10 min and it all works now. Installed it back in the Instrument panel and let it run for four or five more miles. Reset the trip OD and let it run a couple of more.

Anybody need a 87 Instrument cluster with a, Speedo (working odometer), large tach, repaired small clock out there? Seem to have an extra all of a sudden.

Good Luck and hope this helps,

Paul
