Mine is in the "normal" configuration: connected at the front and sort of dangling in space near the block, not connected at that end.

If I take the thing off, do I need to put some sort of cover or filter over the holes? Is it okay to have unfiltered openings into the block?

What are the symptoms of a cooked AMM?
