charging system: TOO MUCH voltage- I don't want to FRY anything! 700 1991

Hi All,

740 sedan, 1991, B230F, 90K kilometers mint original car.

Battery was dead last week.
We repalced it, and when measuring the voltage at the battery, it read between 16 and 16.5 VDC with car on idle. Too high.

I carefully stuck the probe to the back of the alternator, and it read just over 17 VDC.

I replaced the regulator assembly off the alternator, absolutely no change at the alt nor at the battery.

What is in the wiring for the charging system? I have the bently for the 240, but not the 740. Can the alternator core be at fault? Can it be something else?

Let me know.

Thanks!
