volvo 240 dl transmission re-installation 200 1989

i reintstalled the tranny on my car the other day and im working on getting the minor details put back to gether. there is a cord that connects to the top of the transmission ( speedo wire ) wit htwo connections. when i took the wire off, i noticed that one of the connections didnt have a rubber connector on it. my speedo worked just fine before i replaced the transmission, so im wondering what those 2 wires really do. is one a ground??? i really have no idea. any input would be appreciated.thanks! ;)
