This has killed me for months. I'll try to answer all your questions in hopes it helps me and anyone else with similar symptoms. To reply to Paul's questions about my problem:
P: Did it happened as you got the car warmed up, say as you left a red light?
Me: it would happen ONCE. The very FIRST application of the gas pedal to accelerate, after successfully starting the car. Whether or not I put it in R or D...
P:It seems to get better for a while?
Me: It would happen as explained above. Then never happen again until the next instance of starting up the car (which would start fine. idle fine. But as soon as I pressed the gas pedal...).
P:Seems to be worse in warmer weather?
Me: Doesn't seem to matter if its 40 or 80 degrees outside.
P:After you get past the stumble the engine will catch and then take off?
Me: EXACTLY. Gets past the stumble and its fine.
P:Can you run at highway speeds all day long?
Me: Yep. No problem. Same with in town speeds. No problem.
P:At idle she runs just fine. It is just that getting past the stubble on take off.
Me: Yep. Again. This doesn't happen first thing in the morning after I start the car after it sat all night or even all day, but say after I started it, went to work, then 25 minutes later got in and started it again and tried to hit the gas, THAT is when it happens.
P:If it happens again, that is the exact description of the Fuel Pressure Regulator problem on my 86.
Me: I smelled gas months ago and saw the FPR was leaking! Changed it with a new one. I haven't tested pressure in the fuel lines, so unless the new FPR is bad...
So far I've experienced two VERY slight hesitations with the "new used" AMM installed. This is over the course of 2 days and at least a dozen situations that I've described above where it would usually happen.
Let's hope that darn AMM is the culprit of MANY a symptom and that I may have found the answer!
Thanks!
