Temp gauge showing overheat after ALT replacement? 200 1982

I just recently replaced my old alternator with one of those 100 amp units fron eBay. It fits just fine even with a sender for the oil pressure. Anyways right after I installed it I've been getting 9:30, 10, and even 11 o'clock readings on the temperature guage. Yikes. Before the istall the temp guage was a steady 9:00. I went back and shoved a pry bar between the block and alternator to make sure the belts were well tensioned. There's about a half inch of deflection in the belts and the alternator sits a wee bit (tiny) more angled than the original one. I have poly accessory bushings from ipd by the way and my year of brick does not have the compensation board thing to worry about. Any thoughts??
