544 project car 444-544 1961

After inspecting for rust, getting engine running & adjusting carbs, worry about brakes (my #1 issue until I got this fixed - which entailed upgrading to discs in the front). Rear brakes had not been touched in a long time, and when I finally got a puller and got them off, one side was covered in oil - this likely explained why multiple brake adustments never seemed to fix the car jumping a lane over during hard braking on freeways.

After brakes, I would take a serious look at the front suspension components. Replace tie rod joints, rebush idler arm, king pins, shocks...steering box overhaul if "swimmy"?

You'll want new tires since the car has been sitting 10 years.

If all the chrome looks good, you've just saved yourself at least $600, up to a couple thousand. How's the interior?

If you want to make this a show car, you're looking at $$$, but if your goal is to get it on the road and drive it, these are the main things to consider first.
