Bad Air Mass Meter? 200 1985

I drove my 1985 245 about 10 miles this morning. It ran perfectly. A couple of hours later I wnet to move the car, and It would start, and immediately die. When I finally got it to keep running, the idle was extremely rough, and you can smell a very rich gas odor. I unplugged the Air Mass Meter, and the car idles great, but won't accelerate worth a damn. Is the Air Mass Meter fried? I removed it, and cleaned it with Aerosol MAF cleaner, but it did not help. I tried again, and gave the Air Mass Meter a sharp rap with a screwdriver, and it instantly smoothed out, and then went right back to the rough idle.
