Today, before installing the new AMM on the 1985 245, I removed the complete air intake system. I found that the thermostat air valve was allowing the flapper to remain dedicated to the heated air supply, even though the ambient temperature was 88 degrees f. The thermostat valve was free and not binding in any manner. I used a drill, and drilled a couple of holes in the flapper, and a couple in the bottom of the air box (prior to the filter). I used a tie wrap to lock the flapper closed to heat and constantly open to the cold air side. I live in Central Florida, and we don't have extremely cold temperatures to deal with. I then inserted a pipe plug that was an interference fit into the tube that is fed by the heat pipe. Now I will only get outside air from behind the headlight via the Snorkel. The hot air tube is connected, but is prevented from being operational.
Speaking of the Snorkel, that device seems to be fairly restrictive by design. Has anyone tried cutting it off to the largest cross-section in the tube, and running it that way? As I said, I had it all apart, and cleaned everything prior to reassembly. Is there any other thing to which I need to make changes, or have I just about covered everything?
